Is it sheer coincidence that SquidInk’s tattoo studio in Arrigorriaga is also located alongside the drag to the train station? Or perhaps just a nod to Rob’s prolific passion for travel. Arrigorriaga is a small town just outside Bilbao in Spain’s Basque country – a beautiful mountainous region off the main tourist track, where Rob spends time each year.
SquidInk’s Spanish clients choose and love similar styles to those in the UK, with a few subtle differences: Athletic Bilbao tattoos are very popular, as is the lauburu – the four sided ancestral symbol of the region.
When Rob’s working in Folkestone, Spanish tattooists Sandra and Gorka take capable charge of the modern, open-plan studios in Arrigorriaga. Both are experienced artists who can offer a wide range of styles, with Sandra having a ‘particular penchant’ for colour work.
SquidInk Tattoo has made a name for itself locally, but Rob’s murals have also created a conversation. Using paints (not brushes) he has transformed walls alongside the river with black and grey paintings. The happy result has been local admiration and a wonderful acceptance of SquidInk Tattoo into the community.
